Haneda or Narita — the choice that costs you an hour

Tokyo has two international airports, and the difference between them is significant.

Haneda (HND) sits about 24km from central Tokyo, with direct connections to the Keikyu and Tokyo Monorail lines. You can be in Shinjuku roughly 30 minutes after clearing customs.

Narita (NRT) is about 80km out. The Narita Express or Keisei Skyliner takes around an hour and costs considerably more than the Haneda connection.

Turkish Airlines operates into both, so check the airport code before booking. A fare that looks $40 cheaper into Narita often isn’t, once you add the transfer and the lost time after an eleven-hour flight.

When to book and when to fly

The cheapest booking window on this route is around 40 days ahead — earlier than the four to eight weeks that works for European routes, but not the months-ahead figure people often assume for long-haul.

September is typically the cheapest month, with June and July also coming in low. March is the busiest: cherry blossom season drives both demand and price. Golden Week in late April and early May is similarly expensive and worth avoiding if you’re price-sensitive.

Autumn, from late October into November, gives you mild weather, autumn colour, and fares well below spring levels.

Airlines flying the route

Turkish Airlines and ANA both fly nonstop between Istanbul Airport and Tokyo, using the same aircraft type. Turkish Airlines operates around 18 nonstop flights per week and is the most popular option on the route.

For connections, Qatar Airways and China Southern both run frequent one-stop services. Routings through Doha, Beijing or Seoul often undercut the nonstop fare by a meaningful margin, but they add anywhere from four to eight hours onto an already long journey.

Getting into the city

Whichever airport you land at, buy a Suica or PASMO card at the station. It works on every train, subway and bus in the city and in most convenience stores, and it saves you working out fares at each machine.

If you’re arriving at Narita on a late flight, check the last train time before you land. Missing it means a taxi fare that can exceed $200.
