Flying from Istanbul to Jeddah
Jeddah airport and onward travel to Makkah
King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED) is the main gateway for travellers heading to Makkah, roughly 95km southeast of the airport.
International flights are handled at the main terminal, with a separate Hajj Terminal operating during the Hajj season for pilgrims travelling on organised group visas.
The Haramain High Speed Railway connects Jeddah to Makkah in around 30 minutes, with a station serving the airport. Coaches and private transfers also run the route, typically taking 60 to 90 minutes depending on traffic.
If you’re travelling for Umrah, check whether your package already includes airport transfers before arranging your own. Many operators include them, and paying twice is a common and avoidable mistake.
When to book
Book as early as you can on this route. Demand follows the religious calendar rather than the seasons, and the busiest periods sell out months in advance.
Ramadan is the peak period for Umrah travel, and fares rise sharply in the weeks before it begins. The final ten days of Ramadan are the most expensive of the entire year on this route.
The Hajj season brings another surge, with much of the capacity taken by chartered and group bookings. Independent travellers should book well ahead or expect limited availability.
The quietest and cheapest windows fall outside Ramadan and Hajj. Because these dates shift roughly eleven days earlier each Gregorian year, check the current calendar rather than assuming a fixed month.
Airlines and baggage
Turkish Airlines operates the direct route from Istanbul Airport (IST) with full service included, and Saudia flies the same pairing from the Saudi side. Pegasus serves the route from Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) at lower base fares, with baggage and seat selection charged separately. Flynas also operates on the corridor.
Check which Istanbul airport your flight departs from. IST sits on the European side and SAW on the Asian side, and the two are well over an hour apart in traffic.
Baggage allowance deserves particular attention here. Travellers on this route often carry more luggage than usual, and the difference between a full-service allowance and a budget carrier’s paid extras can wipe out the fare saving entirely. Compare the total cost including baggage, not the headline price.
Before you travel
Entry requirements depend on your nationality and the purpose of your travel, and the rules for Umrah and Hajj differ from ordinary tourist entry. Check the official Saudi visa portal or your nearest Saudi consulate well before booking, as processing times vary.
Jeddah is hot year-round, with summer temperatures regularly above 40°C and high humidity from the Red Sea. Pack accordingly, and allow more time than you think between connections if you’re travelling in the summer months.
